Do you listen with your speaker grilles on or off? Why?
- Submitted by Gerald Neily, Jun 20 2004
An argument could be made that most speakers are designed to sound best with their grilles intact, while others might reason that anything in front of a tweeter has got to be bad. Reader Gerald Neily wants to know if you prefer to listen with your speaker grilles on or off.
Always on: 34%
On most of the time: 15%
Off most of the time: 10%
Always off: 29%
My speakers don't have removable grilles: 9%
Grilles? Where did they go? I have not seen my speaker grilles since they day I bought my speakers. I think the grilles went out with the boxes and packaging.

It really depends on the whether the speakers were designed to be listened to, with or without the grilles on (eg Avalon Eidolon, with grilles; JM Utopia, without).

hear the difference. The sound is more transparent without grilles. And Dynaudio, maker of my Contour S3.4 speakers, also advises to take the grilles off during serious listening.

No matter what the manufacturer claims, I always find that a speaker sounds better without the grille on.

Grilles always on, on my Impulse H2 horns; it stops them swallowing small children. Also happens to sound better, but that's a secondary consideration.

My Acoustat speakers, with the grilles off, are ugly to behold (to the eye, not to the ear). Ugly, ugly, ugly! Also, the grille does keep some of the dust out.
